The 1970s dresses had been about simple lines and high necks which was a complete contrast when the 80s rolled around. Everything about weddings in the 1980s became bigger, bolder and better. In the fashion world it was a time of drama and daring looks made of big hairdos, bold colours, lots of accessories, shoulder pads, flowers, puffs, frills and lace.
It was an eclectic age of fashion and the wedding dresses followed suit in every way!
With Princess Diana’s wedding in 1981, it really set the tone as the iconic look of the decade - the fantasy wedding which was recreated by brides throughout the 1980s. The big ball gown dress with a cathedral veil trailing behind (although not all were 24 ft long).
Princess Dianna’s dress is considered the most iconic dress of its time and her wedding to Prince Charles was dubbed the wedding of the century.
Embroidery and colour started to come through particularly after Fergie and Andrew's wedding in 1986. Sarah Ferguson had her and Andrew's initials embroidered onto her 17ft train as well as some icons from the family crest. After this, we had many requests for initials to be embroidered onto cuffs and trains.
The trend for colour was starting then too, Emma Thompson was by far the most memorable icon for the brightly coloured wedding dress.
Our beautiful shell pink Rosebud dress was featured on the front page of the Irish Times when launched. It was a most delicate shade and featured 65 handmade roses and a pannier skirt. As this was the season of excess and I was so influenced by Marie Antoinette I was in my element. The more beautiful detail the better. You can see this influence in some of our lovely brides of that era. Extraordinary large puff sleeves, ballgown skirts, flowers and statement bows, cinched waists in taffeta and raw silk were the trends of that time and I loved it.
These style wedding dresses were usually paired with oversized bouquets and matching flower crowns with the most common hairstyle of the time, the teased or backcombed up-do with some loose curls. The bridal look was often topped off with Pastel colour eye makeup and pink or red lipstick.
The 80’s also gave way to the start of wedding videography as well as the traditional tiered style wedding cakes we all enjoy today.
